About this event

Join COWI, the Newtown Creek Alliance, and industry professionals to discuss opportunities, challenges, and solutions for developing and maintaining ecological elements into industrial shorelines. Too often failing shorelines are replaced with sterile structures that don’t provide intertidal habitat or water quality and ecological benefits. While constraining factors in industrial areas, such as intensive landside operations, upland contamination, and maritime use/navigation depths limit standard options for creating green shorelines, there are opportunities and successful examples to draw from. We aim to gather the unique perspectives of professionals coming from regulatory, marine engineering, landscape designing, and environmental and community planning professions to produce a matrix of considerations and ideas for green elements to implement in the industrial waterfront design and redevelopment process, that can help influence waterways like Newtown Creek and beyond.
